EMPURAAN ( NO SPOILERS )

Empuraan, summed up in one sentence—a marvelous cinematic experience that stands as one of the finest productions in Malayalam cinema. Prithviraj showcases his exceptional directorial skills, pushing the boundaries of entertainment in Mollywood. Some of the visuals are so breathtaking that, had this been five or six years ago, no one would have imagined such a film being made. Prithviraj has delivered a film that not only meets expectations but also fully justifies the immense hype surrounding it.

Direction & Filmmaking

Starting with direction, despite Prithviraj’s limited experience as a filmmaker, Empuraan is nothing short of a masterpiece. The claim of Hollywood-level execution wasn’t just promotional talk—it was the result of sheer focus, dedication, and precise execution. The way he controlled the camera, knowing exactly what to do and when, resulted in stunning and immersive visuals. The making of this film deserves special mention, as it’s not just the direction but the entire filmmaking approach that makes it extraordinary. This is truly a visual spectacle for cinephiles who appreciate outstanding filmmaking, especially from a relatively small film industry like Mollywood.

Story & Screenplay

While the film has been hyped for its scale, as Prithviraj himself stated, it is ultimately a simple story. Lucifer, the first part of the franchise, focused on Stephen and the local political scene, whereas Empuraan expands to explore Indian politics on a broader scale. At its core, though, it remains a revenge drama. If you’re expecting a complex narrative filled with unexpected twists, this might not be the film for you. Instead, Empuraan thrives more in its execution than in its storytelling. Personally, I found myself more captivated by the grandeur of the filmmaking rather than the depth of the story.

That said, Murali Gopy’s screenplay does complete justice to the plot. The script is rich in detail, ensuring a well-paced three-hour runtime without unnecessary scenes or slow moments. The film juggles multiple storylines, yet the writing ensures clarity, seamlessly continuing from Lucifer while introducing numerous new characters and subplots. Murali Gopy maintains his signature approach to politics and religion, making Empuraan consistent with his previous works in tone and depth.

Performances & Action

Beyond its filmmaking brilliance, the performances—especially by Mohanlal and Prithviraj—are another major highlight. If you're a Mohanlal fan, rest assured that every time he appears on screen, he delivers a powerhouse performance. The action sequences are well-executed, though they might not surpass those in Lucifer. Mohanlal remains at the center of the action, but at times, his familiar fighting style from previous films is evident. Depending on the viewer, this could be seen as either a strength or a limitation. Meanwhile, Prithviraj prioritizes giving Mohanlal the spotlight in action scenes, much like in Lucifer, focusing on his role beyond just physical sequences. Overall, the action won't disappoint any viewer.

Apart from these two industry giants, the entire cast delivers stellar performances. Each character gets sufficient screen time, and their contributions play a crucial role in shaping the film. With two parallel narratives unfolding, the film presents a dual-tone storytelling approach—one side embracing Hollywood-style performances, while the other retains the essence of Mollywood.

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, Empuraan is not just a great film—it’s an extraordinary milestone for Malayalam cinema. It elevates the industry to new heights, proving that Mollywood can achieve international standards of filmmaking. If you’re a Prithviraj or Mohanlal fan, don’t miss the opportunity to experience it on the big screen. As a cinephile, I see this as a significant step forward for Malayalam cinema, inspiring filmmakers to dream big and execute their visions flawlessly.

For everyone else, I encourage you to embrace the film’s brilliance while watching it in theaters. Waiting for an OTT release might make you miss out on the true essence of this grand cinematic experience.

IDENTITY (MALAYALAM, 2025)

Here is the first sentence I dedicate to the hopeful journey towards my story telling.  To begin with, Identity, a 2025 malayalam movie, which i felt was a simple thriller story. The movie revolves around a few characters initially, but becomes slightly confusing as the story progresses with the addition of new characters. The theme of the movie is about how a witness to a crime becomes entangled in a complicated situation. The story is easy to follow in the first half, but the second half requires more attention to detail. Personally, I found the movie engaging throughout, and the experience was exciting. Let's dive into the story. As I mentioned earlier, the story is simple, and there's no need to elaborate excessively. The movie introduces several new topics and ideas to the audience, some of which may be familiar, but the filmmakers still manage to explain them effectively for those who are unaware of it. The movie relies on these concepts to create an exciting experience ...
